Family Music for Toddlers

Ages 16 months to 3 years old
Classes meet for 30 minutes. Each child must be accompanied by an adult.

In our Toddlers class we will delight in the endless energy of your children, their joy in bouncing, rocking, and dancing with you, and in seeing them develop in this wonderful, musical environment! As we sing, bounce, rock, dance, and play instruments together we are laying the foundation necessary for success in music, regardless of which path your toddler takes in the future.

Toddlers are always on the move! This is not only their favorite new-found skill, but it's the most effective way for them to learn. Through purposeful movement activities children will begin to learn the important skill of sitting still and listening. Listening is the cornerstone of all learning. While most children have the ability to hear from birth, all children must be taught to listen well. Our focused listening activities direct the children to listen to short examples of familiar sounds. It is necessary to teach children to focus on sounds and filter out peripheral sounds.

All children are innate singers. In fact, the cooing of a child is very light, high, and musical. By keeping the child in a singing-rich environment your child will retain his/her singing voice and gain control of it in an ever-expanding range. And singing songs, playing instruments, dancing, and rocking with you elevates these experiences so they live on in the mind of the child forever. Musikgarten involves the whole family! In addition to attending classes with your toddler, you will receive a CD, a parent activity book, and an instrument or scarf to use at home.

The Cycle of Seasons

Ages 3 – 5
Classes meet for 30 minutes.

Pre-school age children are at a pivotal point in their musical development. In The Cycle of Seasons children will enjoy using all of their senses to discover the world around them. They will delight in discovering the wonder that nature provides on a daily basis.

In The Cycle of Seasons the children giggle as they sing and play instruments to Five Freckled Frogs. Their imaginations are busy as they are called on to think how the tadpole feels swimming through the water after breaking free from his egg. They “become” the tadpole as he gracefully moves around the pond. The children then enact the transformation and they joyfully croak and hop their way across the room. Finally, they settle down into the listening corner to listen to the recorded sounds of green frogs and bull frogs, focusing and refining their listening skills.

In addition to singing, playing instruments, purposeful movement activities, and focused listening, the children are learning the language of music. In each class the children echo a series of tonal and rhythm patterns. These patterns are found in the singing repertoire, and they will be the first patterns the children will learn to read in music notation in the coming years.

To continue the fun of music at home you receive family packets for each season of the year. Packets include outstanding CDs, full color illustrated cards for listening activities, and a parent activity book.
